Singapore’s Hawker Culture is famous worldwide, but how did we go from illegal pushcarts fleeing the police (“Pao Di Niu”) to earning UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status and Michelin stars?

“Hawker Tales” is a limited-run exploration that goes beyond the typical tourist trails. We venture into the gritty, authentic heart of the North Bridge Road and Golden Mile precincts—areas rich in history but often overlooked. This is not just a food tour; it is a time-travel journey through the culinary soul of Singapore.

Who is this for?

  • For Locals (SG Culture Pass): Rediscover your backyard. Learn the stories of our evolving (and still evolving hawker culture) as well as the resilience of our hawker forefathers.

  • For Travelers: Skip the tourist traps. If you want to see the places where the locals dine at

Part of SG Culture Pass. For Singaporeans, you can use your Culture Pass Credits here:

This special run of Hawker Tales will end on 31 Jan

  • Note on Food: This is a cultural tasting tour. We provide curated sampling portions so you can try a variety of distinct flavors without the “food coma.” Come with an open mind and a curious palate!

Tour Details

What is Hawker Tales?
This is not just a lunch run. Hawker Tales is a time-travel journey through Singapore’s stomach. We answer the question: How did illegal street carts transform into a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage?

On this Singapore hawker food tour, you will taste the specific dishes that mark the eras of our history—from the “Coolie” staples of the 1950s to the Michelin-recognized innovations of today.

What to Expect
  • The Hidden Gem: Explore North Bridge Road Food Centre, a local secret with deep ties to temple culture and community building.

  • The Transition: Visit Golden Mile Food Centre (The Army Market), a perfect example of how hawkers were resettled from the streets into purpose-built centres in the 1970s.

  • The Michelin Story: We stand before Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodle, the only hawker stall in Singapore currently holding a Michelin Star. We will dive deep into the history of this legendary family, the burden of the “star,” and the reality of the 2-hour queue. (Note: We will not be eating here due to the queue, but you will learn the secrets behind their success).

Why is Singapore Hawker Culture on the UNESCO list?

    • It was awarded Intangible Cultural Heritage status in 2020 because “Hawker Centres” act as “Community Dining Rooms” where people of diverse backgrounds gather. Our tour explores this social fabric.

  • Is this tour suitable for locals?

    • Absolutely. We designed this to show Singaporeans the history they might have missed. You know the taste, but do you know the struggle behind the stall?

  • Do we visit Michelin stalls?

    • Yes, the route features stops recognized by the Michelin Guide, highlighting how street food can achieve world-class status.
