Join us for a tour through Singapore’s design journey as we explore the National Design Centre at 111 Middle Road.

The National Design Centre is the nexus for design where designers, businesses, students and the public meet to exchange ideas, use the amenities and attend design-focused exhibitions and programmes. Centrally located in Bras Basah.Bugis, Singapore’s arts, heritage and design precinct, it is also home to the DesignSingapore Council – the national agency for design.

As we walk through the hallowed halls of this repurposed, award-winning conserved building, we will also be sharing more about its storied history, and the transformation it went through to become the centre that it is today.

Uncover the history and heritage of the conserved building, what it stands for today, the community that lives here, and the various programmes that take place in the space.

111 Middle Road has seen the development of Singapore over the years. The building we know today consists of three pre-World War II Art Deco blocks and one post-war modern block. They have been lovingly restored and adapted to suit the current usage. We will introduce you to the different nooks and secret crannies that is well worth exploring for their rich cultural and historical significance.

Witness how design has evolved from the 1960s and contributed to Singapore’s economy and development.

We will walk through the design decisions that shaped Singapore, from the forging of a common culture vocabulary, to the transformation of businesses, to the maximization of our limited resources to make an impact on the world stage. We will also discuss what it means to develop a Singapore Brand, and will introduce you to the many designers who brought us to today.

Singapore has been designated a UNESCO creative City of Design since 2015. This is a recognition of how intertwined design is in our fabric of life, influencing how we live, work and play.

We will introduce you to Singaporean design and designers, past and present, and show you how they shaped the Singapore we know today.

We will also tell you a lot more about the history as we walk through 111 Middle Road.

Our tours will follow all current Safe Distancing Measures (SDM) as prescribed by the Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) during the Circuit Breaker (CB) period.

This will include limiting the number of guests allowed on each tour. Guests in one tour group may also have to be further divided into smaller sub groups, with sub group size mandated by the current SDM
